Snapseed for Android.

Snapseed

Snapseed has now been released for Android following Google's purchase of its creator (Nik software). The app is free (which is always nice) and features Google+ integration but don't worry you can always just share your finished product too some other app instead.

My journey back to stock Android from CM10

android thoughts

I decided to go back to stock Android a few days ago as I felt that performance just wasn't that great as SystemUI in particular had a tendency to force close once or twice a day and in general things were getting slower on my Nexus S.

I bought a few apps in the 0.25c promotion as it was my first real sale I got a chance to look at since I got my first Android device. Here are some reviews of the apps that impressed me the most so far.

B2G (Boot 2 Gecko)

I just had a proper test of the desktop builds of Mozilla's new HTML5 based mobile OS called Boot 2 Gecko. It is pretty glitchy but obviously unfinished so you have to look past the glitches. The OS already has some support from OEMs and networks so we should actually see some B2G devices in the wild sometime in the near future.

Boid Beta vs Tweet lanes (Android Twitter apps)

The official Twitter app on Android is pretty meh so it does no harm to shop around for a better way to get your twitter fix on the go! I am going to compare two free Twitter clients that come with holo themes and good ideas.

Alan Wake and product placement in games

Alan Wake always seemed like an interesting game to me but it was never a game I ended up getting since I lost interest and kind of forgot about it since at the time I did not have an Xbox and had no plans to get one. I do have an Xbox now and it is most certainly my primary console so when I went to pre-order Borderlands 2 and saw Alan Wake for 11.99 pre-owned I decided I would get it and give it a shot.

The new Nexus

This is just my thoughts on what will happen with the new Nexus this year. I'm guessing we will know more soon as I would agree with the common theory that the announcement will come on the five year anniversary of Android.

Cyanogenmod 10 nightlies

Although I have had a Nexus I did not start using ROMs until mid august because I love the feel of stock Android anyway but after a while with Jelly Bean I felt I might as well give a ROM a proper chance.

Motorola's live event

I watched some of the Motorola live event today on YouTube as I was not doing anything and it was refreshing for an American company to do one of these things at a time Europeans can easily watch too.

Reviews of apps I bought in the end of summer sale

Just some quick reviews of apps I bought during the end of summer sale on Google play.

Do I like NFC?

I have had my Nexus S since about march of 2012 but as much as I wanted to I had no way to actually try out NFC on my phone. I didn't know anyone else that had an NFC enabled phone or any other NFC devices, Shops don't do NFC transactions in Ireland and I wasn't too interested in the idea of getting stickers shipped from America as there is always the risk of fees and delays due to customs.

The little Nexus that can!

The Asus Nexus 7 is the first foray into the tablet market for Google's Nexus line of devices designed for a pure Android experience. A lot of people were surprised by Google's decision to make its first tablet a 7 inch tablet as it is not a massively popular form factor as most tablets float around the 10 inch mark.

Asus Transformer Pad TF300T Review

The Transformer pad TF300T is a mid range member of Asus's transformer line of tablets that are designed with a detachable keyboard dock in mind. I have not already done a review of this and seems like a good time now since it just got updated to Jelly Bean.

Google Reader and why I like it

I really really do like Google Reader. I only started using it a few months ago but have known about it for a long time. I just never felt I had any use for RSS but I eventually decided to give it a go and I liked it.

Sleeping Dogs review

The premise:

You are an undercover cop looking for vengeance in modern day Hong Kong. You play as Wei Chen, an undercover cop and martial arts expert.

The execution:

Very very good. The game has surprised me with how well most things are put together.

Asus starting to roll out jelly bean updates to the transformer family

The TF300 got jelly beanified a few days ago the US but now the worldwide version is getting the update (my trusty TF300 is downloading it as we speak).
The update seemed to be half rolled out when I got up this morning as I saw a post on Reddit saying how it was out for the worldwide version. When I checked on the tablet itself it found an update but instantly failed to actually download the update.
I'm sure it won't be long before the other transformers get their own jar of jelly beans too.

Final thoughts about Gamescom 2012

Was it worth going too?

Yes it was worth travelling all the way to Germany for. I enjoyed getting to try out new games and get some free stuff. The press day is the one with the reveals so I wouldn't say I've learnt anything about a massive new game or anything.

Good guy Valve:

Valve came to Gamescom with a plain black stand that did not advertise their own games at all, they had a steam stand which gave away free games and only promoted some indie games available on steam.

Microsoft vs Sony:

Microsoft had no first party presence at Gamescom at all whereas Sony had a massive presence with both first party and third party games. The Sony section itself was pretty much all open so you were free to wander around it yourself (only the last of us section involved queuing up). I was even more surprised to find that nearly all the cross platform games that were playable on consoles were on PS3s as well. I was fully expecting that 99% of the games would be on the the 360. It seems Sony certainly took its chance to push itself as much as it could have at Gamescom this year.

Gamescom: Day four

Assassin's Creed III:

I had been looking forward to playing AC3 but the queues to get in were insanely long, it was seven whole hours at one point!
I got to play through the naval battle that was shown in earlier videos on YouTube. It was very very enjoyable and an interesting addition to the AC series. The video they let us watch also showed the true power of the new Anvil engine. A large number of soldiers on the battlefield for Connor to work around/through and some pretty new graphics and animations.

Defiance:

The new free to play title from Trion worlds that links to a TV show by the SyFy channel.
I wasn't blown away by the game itself (A fairly generic third person shooter) but the idea of a game with events linked into a TV series is a very interesting idea.

Day Z:

I got to play Day Z for the first time, it was relatively fun but not a great game for shows as its hard to feel involved when you know your progress is gone within 10 minutes.

Gamescom: Day three (the true rise of F2P?)

Shadow company:

Nexon's new title was very disappointing in my opinion. The graphics were poor and the gameplay was stale. It attempted to be a mixture of Counter-Strike and Call of Duty which I feel has not worked at all.

Warface:

I really loved my time playing Crytek's first free to play title, Warface. It was incredibly polished for a free to play title but I would expect that from Crytek. It was easy to pick up and play but at the same time different enough to be interesting.

Hawken:

Hawken looked amazing in the trailers but I never even knew it was at gamescom so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a Hawken booth with a playable version I jumped straight into the queue. It was just as fun as I Imagined. The mechs are very fun to pilot and getting a kill is very satisfying.

Gamescom: Day two

Hitman Absolution:

I got to play the China town level of Hitman absolution that was originally shown off a few months ago. I liked the new Hitman but wasn't blown away by it. I think that was because I had seen the possible options in the video already.

Borderlands 2:

I was very surprised by the level of polish and improvement made on the original borderlands which I loved.

Gamescom: Day one

Dishonored:

Dishonered is just as good to play as all the trailers suggest. Smooth combat and movement, an interesting steam punk style world and a set of powers and weapons that give you several options on how you want to approach a mission.

Medal of honor warfighter:

I was a big fan of the MoH reboot. I enjoyed the realistic story and style of the movement. I loved the DICE made multiplayer as well. I was excited for MoH warfighter as another enjoyable single player and high quality multiplayer game. The multiplayer has been completely revamped now as Danger Close has taken charge golf the multiplayer section as well. A new set of classes and squad like system makes for a very enjoyable multiplayer game.

Google Tasks

I started using Google tasks yesterday and I am genuinely surprised how good it is. I find it really helpful with remembering things I am supposed/want to do.
It becomes even more useful after you add the Chrome app from Google. It adds a tasks icon to the right of the omnibox and when clicked opens a little tasks overlay where you can add or delete tasks and tick tasks as done.
My favorite feature though is adding tasks though the omnibox. Typing "t" and then a space lets you add a task directly to your tasks.
I also purchased an Android app that syncs with Google tasks and has a very nice holo interface and a nice selection of widgets for viewing and ticking tasks as you do them on the go. The app I chose is Tasks by Team tasks.
I can't really say if using tasks has made me more productive or not but it certainly means I don't forget to do things as much.
